The Fleming Smith Warehouse

The Fleming Smith Warehouse

1891

Architects: Stephen Decatur Hatch
Address: 451 Washington Street, Manhattan

Just a bang-on perfect building by Mr. Hatch, clearly channeling his inner Henry J. Hardenbergh. The longtime ground floor tenant was a classic TriBeCa restaurant called Capsuoto Freres, which gave way to the current bling-bling goodness of China Blue after the Hurricane Sandy in 2013. The Warehouse is located in my favorite part of TriBeCa--its northwest section, just south of Canal and west of Hudson Street. It's kind of like the 1980s here, just with renovated buildings occupied by hedge fund managers instead of starving artists and chop shops. At night, it feels about the same, though--almost completely devoid of humanity. You could shoot a horror movie with no NYC permitting, easy. Just don't forget a nightcap at Puffy's.
