Schermerhorn Building

Schermerhorn Building

1888

Architect: Henry J. Hardenbergh
Address: 380 Lafayette Street, Manhattan
Just another perfectly-proportioned building by late 19th-century master Henry J. Hardenbergh, who also built several structures at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, as well as the Plaza Hotel and the Dakota Apartments, of course. This smaller yet equally warm and inviting NoHo structure for many years housed the Time Cafe, home of the Mingus Big Band from 1991-2004 before their move uptown. The ground floor commercial space is currently Andrew Carmellini's brasserie Lafayette Grand Cafe & Bakery.
