E.V. Haughwout Building

E.V. Haughwout Building

1857

Architect: John P. Gaynor
Address: 488 Broadway, Manhattan
The Haughwout is one of about a dozen stunning buildings inhabiting Broadway between Houston and Canal streets. Home to the first passenger elevator (courtesy of Mr. Otis, who else?), this is a rare two-fronted cast iron masterpiece renovated in 1995. I knew I'd be shooting a lot of buildings on this stretch, but the building itself wasn't on my radar until its great 2nd-story clock caught my eye. I like the corner view as well but putting the clock front-and-center in the shot seemed to work best. Wikimedia Commons has some great additional media--floor plans, detail shots, etc.
