Brooklyn Academy of Music
1908
Architect: Herts & Tallant
Address: 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn
Designed by theater masters Herts & Tallant in the delicious Beaux-Arts style, this is probably Brooklyn's most gorgeous building. Officially called the Peter Jay Sharp building, it houses BAM's magnificent 2000-seat Howard Gilman Opera House, the BAM Rose Cinemas, and the BAMcafe on the second floor, behind those lovely windows (with Leo Villareal's Stars LED light installation providing even more drama). If you've never stepped foot in the building, you're missing something. BAM might not quite be Lincoln Center, but its nightly array of offerings isn't shabby. This shot was actually taken with my brother-in-law Dana Besaw's 4x5 camera, and the negative scanned by The Color House New York in SoHo. So far it's the only shot I've taken with that camera that I like, but hey...the night is young.
