The Dorilton
1902
Architects: Janes & Leo
Address: 171 W. 71st Street, Manhattan
Wow. Sitting just below the equally ornate (but monochromatic) Ansonia Hotel two blocks to the north, the level of architectural detail that the Dorilton sports is almost comical (and, of course, loathed by many architecture critics throughout the decades). Mansard roof? check. Bay windows? check. Arched entranceway? check. Wrought-iron detail? check. Carved figures? Check. And the fact that most of the exterior is a not-so-subtle red brick really does make it stand out. The mansard-level spaces were originally designed for artists to use as studios; somehow I don't think an artist lives in this apartment, though.
