2007

Architect: Frank Gehry
Address: 555 W. 18th Street, Manhattan

Gehry's first New York building, and his best, since it's a perfectly-realized little jewel sitting on the West Side Highway across from Chelsea Piers. It's fun to look at during the day, of course, but at night is when this masterpiece comes out to play, since essentially the entire building is illuminated from within, giving the impression that the building is simply a shade or a cage for one giant light source within it. Views of it from the High Line are also quite nice, but it's the ground-level view from the West Side Highway that gives you the full effect of the structure. Peeking through the left edge of the shot is Jean Nouvel's 100 Eleventh Avenue condominium...but that's a story for another day.
